Cadbury's "All I want for Xmas" cake selection

We've had a mince pie review, but if you aren't a lover of fruit filled pastry, then today's review might be for you. Up for scrutiny today is the All I want for Xmas cake selection box from Cadburys. Costing £3 for 9 cakes, the box is a bit on the pricey side and you might prefer to wait until it's reduced.

The first thing I noticed was the fact that the box contained one cake less that it did last year, meaning you only get one Rudolph cake. Considering they're the only one that looks remotely festive, I feel Cadburys were a bit tight.

My wife and I shared these during the ex factor final - she got the Rudolph cake.

When I opened the box, I thought the cakes looked much smaller than I remember. It could just be that I'm greedy, but they're no more than 2 bites each. No wonder we polished off the box in one sitting.

CARAMEL CAKE
This was my wife's favourite cake, but she is a caramel fiend, so I expected nothing less. She said the caramel gave it a pleasantly sickly taste, and was sweet with a hint of salt. The white chocolate wasn't too noticeable in the taste, but looked good none the less.

I thought it had enough caramel to make it moist, but not so much that it took away from the chocolate cake. Really nice.

FLAKE CAKE
My wife said she found this cake the messiest - it crumbled in her hands and the cake was crumbier than the others. Nice sponge cake and the chocolate is obviously standard Cadburys, but she wasn't overly keen on the butter cream.

I found the Flake cake had the perfect sponge - really moist and light and the buttercream worked really well with the sponge and chocolate. Another good cake.

RUDOLPH CAKE
My wife had this one and said it was very dry! I remember having these a few years back and they were really lovely, which plenty of buttercream to stop it being claggy. On this occasion, I found it to be really dense, very dry and just not very nice. Initially, I was gutted there was only one in the box, but - after tasting it - I think that was actually a good thing.

MINI YULE LOGS
Both myself and my wife agreed these were very dry, the butter cream swirl seemed quite solid and so didn't add much moisture. The chocolate was a little bit chalky and the sponge wasn't the best tasting.

FESTIVE CAKE BARS
These were my favourite from the box! Really good sponge and a delicious white chocolate buttercream. The chocolate coating is spot on and all the flavours and textures work so well together. These are the ones I am most likely to buy again.

OVERALL
My wife and I agree that the only ones that we'd want to eat again are the Caramel cakes and Festive cake bars, both of which can be bought in packs on their own, for a much cheaper price. Is the cake selection worth buying? I guess, if you wanted to try the different cakes without investing in big packs of each one then yes, but personally I'd save your money and just crab the Festive cake bars and the caramel cakes.
